One of our favorite seasonal outreach opportunities, the Giving Tree provides parishioners with the opportunity to brighten a child’s Christmas. At the start of the Christmas season, a traditional Christmas tree is placed in the rear of our church, ornamented with various paper shapes, each bearing the age and gender of a child in need.
Parishioners are asked to remove an ornament and purchase a gift for that child to open come Christmas. Purchased gifts are brought to Mass and placed beneath the tree. Along with the happiness it brings to a number of children, the Giving Tree calls to mind the central reason for the Christmas season. The Giving Tree re-aligns the communal perspective of Christmas within our parish, focusing on our Lord rather than the cultural phenomena of commercialism and indulgence.
