As Catholics we have a rich tradition of prayers and devotions that serve to lead us deeper into loving relationship with God, and to seek His assistance in all of our needs. Below are some of those which have proven very useful and fruitful by countless numbers of the faithful.

Traditional Catholic Prayers & Devotions

The Rosary

How to Recite the Rosary

While the complete rosary is composed of 15 decades, it is acceptable to recite five decades centered around either the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, or Glorious Mysteries on a given day.

Beginning Prayers

  1. Sign of the Cross
  2. The Apostle’s Creed (said on the large Crucifix)
  3. The Our Father (first large bead after the Crucifix)
  4. Three Hail Mary’s (said on the next three beads)
  5. Glory Be to the Father (said on the next large bead )

Praying Each Decade

  1. Begin by naming a mystery of the rosary and begin mediating on that mystery throughout the remainder of the decade.
  2. Recite the Our Father on a large bead.
  3. Recite one Hail Mary on each of the next 10 small beads.
  4. Recite the Glory Be to the Father and the ‘O My Jesus’ Prayer from Fatima on the next large bead.
  5. Begin the next decade by naming the next mystery, and reciting the Our Father on the same large bead. (continue steps two thru five until at least 5 decades have been recited).

Closing Prayers

  1. Recite the Hail Holy Queen Prayer.
  2. Close with the Prayer After the Rosary.

Divine Mercy Chaplet

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

This devotion uses ordinary rosary beads and begins with:
Our Father, Hail Mary and The Apostles Creed.

On the large bead before each decade of the Rosary say:
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

On the ten, small beads of each decade say:
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

After praying for five decades, conclude by saying three times:
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

The Angelus

The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary:
And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it done unto me according to Thy word.

Hail Mary . . .

And the Word was made Flesh: And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary . . .

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:

Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about
the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.
